State College, Pennsylvania, offers more than just the energy of a college town—it's also home to a vibrant craft beer and beverage scene. During my recent visit, I explored the town's finest bars, breweries, and even a local winery, sampling the drinks and enjoying the welcoming atmosphere unique to this part of Pennsylvania.
One of my first stops was Otto's Pub and Brewery, a staple in the State College beer scene. Known for its relaxed vibe and an impressive lineup of craft beers, Otto's didn't disappoint. I sampled their Apricot Wheat, a refreshing option with a hint of fruitiness, and their Mt. Nittany Pale Ale, a smooth and balanced choice that's perfect for any beer lover. Their food menu, featuring locally sourced ingredients, was an excellent complement to the drinks.
A short drive from downtown, Happy Valley Brewing Company stood out for its rustic charm and bold flavors. The brewery operates out of a beautifully restored barn, which adds to the cozy, welcoming feel. I tried their Tailgater Kölsch, a light and crisp beer that's perfect for Penn State football weekends, as well as the Tyrion Irish Red, a rich and malty brew with just the right amount of sweetness.
Located slightly outside of town in Bellefonte, Robin Hood Brewing Co. offered an eclectic range of beers and a family-friendly atmosphere. The Black Cherry Porter was a standout, blending roasted malt flavors with subtle fruit notes. Their craft pizza menu is another reason to visit, making it a great stop for dinner and drinks.
Zeno's Pub is an underground gem located in downtown State College. Known for its extensive beer list and laid-back vibe, it's a favorite among locals and visitors alike. I sampled a few Pennsylvania beers on tap, including options from Tröegs and Victory Brewing Company. The staff was knowledgeable and happy to recommend beers based on my preferences.
If you're looking for a high-energy experience, The Phyrst is the place to be. Famous for its live music and friendly crowd, this bar offers a rotating selection of draft beers, including many from local breweries. I enjoyed a glass of Yuengling Lager here—when in Pennsylvania, it's hard to pass up the state's iconic brew.
Doggie's Pub was a delightful find, blending a relaxed bar vibe with a fun college-town atmosphere. The highlight for me was their draft cider selection, which added a refreshing twist to the usual beer options. It's a great spot to unwind with friends and enjoy some casual drinks.
For something a little different, I visited Big Spring Spirits in Bellefonte. While known for their craft spirits, they also feature a tasting room with local wines and ciders. I tried a crisp white wine from Mount Nittany Vineyard & Winery and a dry cider from a nearby producer. The modern tasting room and stunning views of Spring Creek made it a memorable stop.
Located on the slopes of Mount Nittany, this family-owned winery offers incredible views and a range of wines made from local grapes. I tried their Chambourcin Reserve, a medium-bodied red with notes of dark fruit and spice, and their Vidal Blanc, a light and refreshing white. The winery's peaceful setting provided the perfect contrast to the bustle of downtown.
State College is much more than a college town — it's a destination for beer, wine, and cider enthusiasts. From the cozy charm of Otto's to the lively atmosphere at The Phyrst, there's something for everyone. Whether you're a craft beer fan, a wine lover, or just looking to explore, the local drink scene is worth the visit.
